NEW I-9 FORM EFFECTIVE TODAY (4/3/2009)
Employers must use the revised Form I-9 for all new hires (and re-verifications) beginning April 3, 2009. The current edition of the Form I-9, dated "06/05/2007" will no longer be valid.Employers who continue to use the 06/05/2007 version of the Form I-9 on or after April 3, 2009 may be subject to civil monetary penalties.

USCIS REVISES EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY VERIFICATION FORM I-9
As of November 7, 2007, U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) have issued a new employment verification Form I-9 for all new employees hired in the United States. The revision complies with the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRIRA), which reduces the number of documents employers may accept from new employees during the employment eligibility verification process.

New York Restricts Disclosure of Social Security Numbers
Effective January 1, 2008, the state of New York will restrict the use of Social Security numbers by businesses, including hospitals. The New York State Social Security Number Protection Law applies to all nongovernmental associations and corporations and includes a number of restrictions and stipulations.

Arkansas Law Expands Access to Background Checks
Under a new law expanding access to the state police online criminal background check system, entities such as staffing agencies, landlords, property owners, financial institutions, law firms and companies that conduct background checks are now allowed to run criminal background checks on people as long as they have the person's written consent, which must remain on file for three years.

Effective immediately the state of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will require a signed and notarized affidavit from each Corporate Screening customer in need of driver history information from that state. This form will be kept on file with PennDOT and will allow Corporate Screening to order driver history reports on your behalf.

Statute Requires More than Federal I-9 Forms
As of January, 2007, Colorado became the first state to impose employment verification obligations to all employers, adding new (and controversial) requirements to existing federal statutes for completing I-9 forms for all new hires. The Colorado statute passed in August 2006 but didn’t take effect until this year.
